Exhaust Pipe Thimbles for Safe Generator Installation

Exhaust pipe thimbles protect your building structure when generator exhaust pipes pass through walls or roofs. These essential components provide an air gap between the hot exhaust pipe and the wall or roof structure, preventing heat damage and meeting critical safety requirements. When exhaust pipes penetrate through combustible walls or roofs, thimbles are required by NFPA 37. At Powerhouse Diesel Generators, we supply heavy-duty generator exhaust thimbles for both mobile and stationary installations.

Installation Requirements and Specifications

The opening in the wall or roof should be 1″ larger in diameter than the outside diameter of the thimble. For combustible wall or roof installations, the thimble must extend at least 9" on each side of the wall or roof (per NFPA 37). Our pipe thimbles meet these strict requirements while providing reliable protection for your facility.

Key specifications for proper installation:

  • Wall thimbles ship with loose flashing for field installation

  • Roof thimbles include pre-welded exterior flashings

  • Leave a 1/4″ gap between the rain guard and the thimble (do not obstruct the thimble's ventilation holes)

Construction Features and Materials

Heavy-Duty Design Elements

The thimble consists of the main cylindrical body, and two flashings used to secure the thimble to the structure. The main body includes internal insulation and a ventilated air gap between the inner and outer shell. This multi-layer construction ensures maximum heat isolation while maintaining proper ventilation.

Available Options

Our generator thimbles come in multiple configurations:

  • Available in any size

  • Carbon steel or stainless steel construction

  • Custom sizing for non-standard applications

  • Pitched roof designs available

Mobile and Stationary Applications

Our exhaust pipe thimbles are perfect for routing exhaust through walls and ceilings of trailers and box trucks, as well as for stationary applications. Whether you're installing a generator in a food truck, emergency response vehicle, or permanent facility, our exhaust thimbles provide the necessary protection and code compliance.

For mobile installations, we understand the unique challenges of vehicle-mounted generators. Our thimbles withstand constant vibration while maintaining their protective properties. Stationary installations benefit from the same robust construction, ensuring years of reliable service.

Code Compliance and Safety Standards

Meeting NFPA requirements isn't optional—it's essential for safe operation and passing inspections. The thimble must conform to the National Fire Protection Association bulletin NFPA-110 and local building codes. Our exhaust pipe thimbles are NFPA compiant, giving you confidence during installation and inspection.

Critical compliance points:

  • When exhaust pipes penetrate through combustible walls or roofs, thimbles are required by NFPA 37

  • Proper spacing must be maintained between exhaust pipe and thimble interior

  • Support exhaust pipes independently to prevent resting on thimble surfaces

  • Ventilation holes must remain unobstructed for proper airflow

Frequently Asked Questions

Faq-connector
question-mark

What size generator thimble do I need?

Select your pipe thimble based on your exhaust pipe diameter, not generator size. We offer all sizes from 2" and up with custom options available for larger installations.

question-mark

Do non-combustible walls require thimbles?

Can I use the same thimble for wall and roof installations?

Wall and roof thimbles have different flashing configurations. A rain guard is provided with roof thimbles to prevent water ingress. Rain guards may also be specified for use with wall thimbles.

Even with concrete or metal walls, we recommend using a generator exhaust thimble to protect roof sealers, coatings, and provide proper exhaust support.
