What Is a Tier 4 Generator?

Tier ratings were developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of the United States government. The tiers are numbered 1 through 4 (or by roman numerals I through IV) with regulations becoming more restrictive in higher numbered tiers. Currently, Tier 4 generators have the strictest regulations, requiring a minimum 90% reduction of Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) and other emissions through the implementation of control technologies such as exhaust gas recirculation, selective catalytic reduction and diesel exhaust fluid systems.

What Is a Prime Generator?

There are two main categories of generators that companies use: Standby, and Primary power generators. Standby generators are used for backup power and are designed for emergency use in case of utility failure. Continuous generators and/or prime power generators are  designed as primary power sources for day-to-day operations. The main difference is that prime generators produce power with lower emissions, while standby generators provide reliable backup power.
